The project

The information platform religion informs about religions in Germany. It is focussed on current discussions in society about religions and on developments in the religious communities. The service is provided mainly for people concerned with religions professionally or in the course of volunteer work, and for all those who wish to know more about religions, specific groups or current topics. This is meant as a way to further understanding and respect towards other religions, thus counteracting prejudices, discrimination and xenophobia.
 

Contents, links and newsletter

The information platform combines different elements which make the internet an immediate source of information:
- Original contents deal with a variety of topics and questions.
- Commented links lead to other sources of information.
- A newsletter keeps track of current events and news, announces conferences and new additions to the contents of www.religon-online.info.
All informations have as their starting point current events, developments and debates. Direct reference to everyday experience is particularly apt to further understanding, tolerance and respect.
 

Resources and cooperation

The service is provided from a “religious studies” point of view. As sources of information are used:
- The documentation centre and archives of REMID (Religionswissenschaftlicher Medien- und Informationsdienst; Religious Studies Media and Information Service), currently containing 160 periodicals and 40 electronic newsletters from religous groups, source marterial and papers from about 350 religious groups and institutions concerned with religions as well as several electronic newsletters.
- Scholarly works and results from personal research.
The information platform religion is open to cooperation, planning to implement this increasingly in the second phase of the project starting from 2003.
 

Grants and outlook

The project set out in the summer of 2002. The implementation of the entire outline is scheduled to take three years. The information platform receives grants from the German Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of its action programme “Entimon. Youth for tolerance and democracy - against right wing extremism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism” from May to December 2002 and again from May 2003.
